OVERNIGHT TOURISTS WARNING: IDYLLWILD, SOCAL DOG BARKING CAPITAL OF THE "PEACEFUL MOUNTAIN" The following was an anemic response from ARF, Animal Rescue Friends:
"Good morning,
I am so sorry to hear of your loud neighbors (53000 block Marian View Dr.). I would be upset if I
were in the same situation. ARF is unaware of your situation (?)*, and sadly
we couldn't do anything about it no matter how much we would like to.
ARF has ZERO authority to enter anyone's property or file complaints
which do not directly affect the ARF House on 243, and we are not
authorized to directly contact a pet owner in regards to barking. The
only pet owners we may contact are those who are in the process of
adopting from us, are working with us on veterinary treatments, or those
who have initially contacted us.
We are disappointed that ARF is being held responsible for a matter over
which "we have no control or knowledge." (A LIE)*. We do our best to educate pet
guardians, but our recommendations and suggestions are not always
welcomed nor heeded. (EVASIVE)*.
I truly hope you're able to convince Riverside County Animal Services to
take action. (THEY TAKE NO "ACTION")*.
*Parentheses are MY COMMENTS.

Sincerely,
Janice, Director of Operations

My plea to ARF:
I regret to inform you that due to the horrendous barking dog situation
> and lack of appropriate CONTROL by both owners and the County's anemic
> response to complaints, we're cancelling our monthly contribution to ARF,
> regrettably.
> My next door neighbor at the 53000 block of Marian View ignores responsible control
> over their 3-4 dogs, as reported to Animal Control, which bark for lengthy periods of time simultaneously (often unsupervised). The problem though is WIDESPREAD.
> Shameful, disrespectful, unlike the ideal attempts to project. I've done
> my due diligence with the County with NO NEIGHBOR OR ARF SUPPORT."
ARF is aware that IDYLLWILD is a dumping ground for unwanted pets from off the hill. Yet they and the Chamber do NOTHING to use their otherwise beefy clout to contain the problem. IDYLLWILD is CHAOS.

I have been to Idyllwild a few times and came this summer for a 3 night stay. It has been very frustrating this time because in mid-June so many shops and restaurants are closed. Thankfully, we did get dinner at my favorite Cafe Aroma, and had dinner at Ferro. Breakfast at the Red Kettle was good as was dinner at the Lumber Mill. Tomorrow is my dog's 8th birthday and I was going to shop at the pet store for her. They have been closed the entire visit and don't open until 11 the day we leave so we won't visit them. So while I love this town, this aspect has been very disappointing.

I didn't know who to voice my concerns with, absent a city government and such. I thought maybe the Chamber of Commerce was the only organized group of city representatives that could listen to my comments...

My family and I visited the city recently and were appalled by our experience.  Mind you, we have visited Idyllwild before, and were almost enamored by the small town feel and hospitality.  That feeling ended yesterday.  I will not belabor this message by ranting on the many awful things we experienced, from the rudeness of the town people, to the horrible hygiene of having only four dirty, foul  restrooms available for hundreds of people, and the complete lack of social distancing and poor adherence to Covid protocols.  I can surmise my feelings like this: Idyllwild is not equipped in any way to handle sizable crowds.

Unlike other mountain cities like Arrowhead and Big Bear, Idyllwild does not seem to have the infrastructure, financing and wherewithal to be anything more than a small, niche mountain town.  Signs warning people of crowding and traffic flow? Non-existent.  Law enforcement protecting hundreds of pedestrians walking the streets and enforcing every kind of traffic violations?  Completely lacking.  Restrooms and sanitation facilities, especially in this time of Covid, made available to guests? Woefully inadequate.  All I saw from a logistical and administrative standpoint was chaos.  I cant even imagine the Covid outbreak dangers such shortcomings may bring on the residents of the city.

Perhaps there isn't much that the city, absent of its own governance and public safety force, can do to assuage such concerns.  Perhaps the roads should close when the city gets too crowded?  Perhaps the county can step up to assist through law enforcement and funding?  I hope something can be done.  No visitor to your town should have to endure such things, especially during a pandemic..
