A Painful First: My Experience with Racism at "Only in Depoe Bay"

I’ve lived in Oregon for over 30 years since moving from Mexico at 18. Never in all that time have I felt the sting of discrimination—until today.

Visiting Depoe Bay with my husband, son, and his girlfriend, we stopped at Only in Depoe Bay. What should have been a simple shopping trip turned into an encounter with pure hostility. The store attendant ignored me as I waited at the front, refused to acknowledge my questions, and stared at me with open contempt. When I finally called her out, she wouldn’t respond—until I walked out, when she suddenly found her voice to yell at me.

Shaken, I left. My son and his girlfriend returned my items, but both the cashier and manager were indifferent, unapologetic, and dismissive. No concern, no questions—just a business that didn’t care.

Hate is creeping into places we once felt safe. When people in power embolden others to treat those who look or speak differently as lesser, this is the result. This experience cut deep, and I hope no one else has to feel what I did today.

This looked like a really cute store so we went to go in today and as we were going in, the lady pulled door shut and locked it with a note they would return in 10 minutes. We went back and the same lady gave us a disgusted look as we came in. I showed my husband a shirt and having worked in retail, I folded it nicely and put it back. The lady marched over to refold it and had such a nasty disposition, we left. The sad part is that she treats customers like that who won't ever return which hurts the owners of the business.

The store is really cute and lots of fun things, the person working there was kinda rude though, and mumbling about how my younger siblings were near the adult section, they were fine and I saw that everything there was not terrible inappropriate, if you don't want kids near the "adult section " then maybe labeled it? Idk it's cute and I don't really care, if the shop persons mad, they can be mad it's super cute in there.

If I could give zero stars I would. The clerk was very rude and nasty. She did not want to give me the 20% discount I was supposed to get by staying in the Airbnb above the store. I tried to show her my Airbnb reservation, as per instructions from Airbnb owner, but she would not look at it. When I insisted she look at it, she got very huffy and said you get 10% off not 20%. I should have just left the merchandise and walked out, but I was in such disbelief that I paid for it anyway. When I got back to our Airbnb, I checked and it did say 20%. To the owner of this store: this occurred on September 16th about 6pm. Please do better!

Don't spend your tourist dollars in a store that hires staff who are dismissive, rude and condescending. We purchased a hoodie; my daughter had second thoughts so we returned immediately to get a refund, as she is smaller than size Small. The cashier essentially mocked me, pointing at the receipt that indicates "No refunds" - and told me to exchange it for something else. If the "No Refund" policy had been clearly visible PRIOR TO PURCHASING, I guess she wouldn't have the opportunity to mock patrons AFTER the transaction occurred. Surely there are standards of customer service, even in a little town like this? Actually, there are. We went up the street to Big Foot's Beach House and were warmly welcomed, and treated respectfully, and only spent $5 instead of $50. Won't be back.

Came in to get a hoodie/jacket. The clerk with long red hair, was incredibly rude! I didn’t fold one of the jackets correctly and he ripped it out of my hands took it and another one to the counter slammed them both down on the counter and stormed back out of the cashier station. Very poor customer service!!
